Southwest Airlines Employee Indicted for Embezzlement
Alleged Theft of Nearly $80,000 in Flight Vouchers
Chicago Midway Airport Worker Charged with Fraud
A former Southwest Airlines employee has been indicted in federal court in Chicago for allegedly printing off and selling nearly $80,000 worth of fraudulent travel vouchers over a two-month period last year.
According to the indictment, the employee, identified as 25-year-old John Doe, worked as a customer service representative at Chicago Midway International Airport when he allegedly devised the scheme.
Doe is accused of using his access to the airline's computer system to generate the vouchers, which he then sold to friends, family, and acquaintances for cash. The vouchers were valid for flights on Southwest Airlines, and Doe allegedly sold them at a discount to their face value.
The investigation into Doe's alleged theft began after Southwest Airlines received several reports from customers who had purchased fraudulent vouchers. The airline contacted the FBI, which launched an investigation that led to the indictment.
Doe has been charged with wire fraud, a felony that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. He is scheduled to appear in court for a bond hearing on Wednesday.
